The more devastating hailstorms with larger hailstones, such a process may not be so viable. Conventional techniques will be required if the car is not written off.

Paintless dent repair history date back to the 1940's when specialist workers at the companies of BMW and Mercedes Benz attempted to remove dents to avoid repainting of whole cars and rolling out more vehicles. Early tools used amongst these skilled innovative workers were the common table spoon! The practice soon spread through Europe and then other industrialised nations particularly in the last 20 to 30 years.
With the spread and popular demand for paintless dent repairs have come more sophisticated tools. Some techniques have developed that allow these technicians to achieve much more without the requirements of respraying.
It now has become standard practice amongst the major insurance companies to have paintless dent removal assessments and quotations prior to any further claims being processed.
Until now, the most devastating hailstorm in living history in Australia is the Sydney hailstorm 14th April 1999. Insurance company data was used to make such a comparison. This storm was spawned in the Illawarra district and produced hailstones to about golf ball sized. The storm headed up the coastal fringe near the National Park. The storm regenerated another updraft explosively and this supercell tracked through the southern and eastern suburbs with devastating consequences. No warnings were issued given the storm occurred outside the official storm season. Hailstones in this storm were official measured at 9cm. However hailstones to about 11cm or even 12cm were widely reported in the worst hit areas. Probably the best evidence of this were holes punctured in tile roofs even relatively new tile roofs.
Hail dents were reported on thousands of vehicles and many of these vehicles were written off - some of the damage showed plastic inner linings being punctured! It is reported that paintless dent repair work in this hailstorm alone last for at least 2 years!
